So I think first I should define what I mean when I am talking about A.I. This stands for artificial intelligence. There is a FANTASTIC podcast episode by stuff you should know on what generative AI that we are all currently interacting with is, how is was developed, and what it is and is not capable of.

Benefits:
Next in Series: as AI relates to authors, I loved Joanna Penn’s concept where she fed her J.F. Penn novels into the system (no clue how she did it, but she knows what shes doing) and asked it to help create an outline for the next in her series. She will still write the book, but her character has many adventures. Asking for ideas to continue the series is kinda cool.

The dreaded book blurb: Even if we write the perfect book blurb today, we know we should be optimizing it. I know some authors are asking chat GPT to help them write better book blurb options. I think that is awesome, especially if they are regularly optimizing anyway. If chatGPT can provide multiple options to test that is cool.

Based on those examples, I like when we can use it to augment what we have already done.

Because I have seen some people try to write entire books in areas they aren’t an expert in chapter by chapter and then they post it, my thought is, “Who are your sources?” I saw someone online post about this use case and said “In that case it’s not artificial intelligence, it’s a plagiarism machine.” So there almost needs to be an option to say “I’m asking this question for a research paper, an article, or a book” and the AI can also spit out their sources. This goes to a larger lack of critical thinking. How does this machine know this information? Where did it come from? Is that source someone I know to be trustworthy on this topic? I think when people hear “artificial intelligence” they expect human deductive reasoning and incredulity to have been applied. No. The machine knows what we tell it. And there is a lot of trash information online.

Challenges:
AI Ownership and Copyright. If I write an article on my website it can be indexed and provided as an answer, but without attribution. So who is going to come to my website? Why should I try to get my website more traffic? But my eBooks are also online. While I am happy to give away my self-publishing knowledge for free (hence this channel), I’m not keen to just give away my fiction work because… um It’s my job. Which is why all of my books now include an AI disclaimer.

AI hallucinations and errors: These models aren’t filtering for truth. I could create a website all about how 2 + 2 is actually 6 and if this gets picked up the AI systems they could provide that as a true answer because it popped up online. And that’s me giving an example of something every human would widely agree is wrong. Imagine how it would handle debated political topics.
