A simultaneous release in this case is when you have your eBook, print books, and audiobooks all release on the same day. Is it possible if you are self-publishing. Yes! But you have to have a lot of patience AND a good sense that you control nothing in the universe.

First, Simultaneous release day, not simultaneous preorder day. This means the books publishes on the same day, but when the links actually show up to preorder is NOT going to match. You pick when you tell people about your preorder. (Whisper: No one’s gonna know until you say something.)

Once all your pre-order links are live and up, then you tell everyone the books releases X day, preorder now. All formats, all retailers, release on X day. It makes it SO much easier to communicate. Executing it however….

Before I dive into the how of making this happen I am going to say that without a doubt, your book must be DONE. DONE DONE DONE to do this. Don’t upload a draft and think you still have time to tweak things.

So how to make this happen. Let’s start with the easiest option:
eBooks – setting your eBook preorder is super easy across all platforms. Every self-publishing platform allows for an eBook preorder. Yay! Set that one first.

Print books – as you’ve heard me lament so many time son this channel, one major self-publishing platform does NOT let you do a print pre-order. So you need to set up your print pre-order through an aggregator like IngramSpark, LuLu, or Draft2Digital. You could just not do a print preorder and upload your print book on your launch day, but then it may take up to 72 hours to show up. So if you want that simultaneous release, preorder via an aggregator. You can uplaod the print book direct to Amazon KDP later on launch day or that week.

Audiobooks – you can set the pre-order for you audiobook in FIndaway Voices, no problem. You CAN set a pre-order in ACX as well, but only if you are exclusive. So in this case I’d suggest going with Findaway Voices for your Amazon and Audible distribution. Now, you won’t be able to enable distribution to Audible and Amazon via Findaway Voices until the eBook is showing up for pre-order in the Kindle store. Again, publication day is the same, not pre-order start.

So I recommend at least 2 months runway. You can upload the print book and there could be delays in getting it approved, same for the audiobook. And when you work with aggregators it can take some time for all the links to show through. Once you see the formats are approved and the links are showing, then you announce your preorder. Then you promote it like crazy until publication day.

And that’s how you do it. It is a lot to plan, so if this is your first book (or even your second) you have permission to launch the formats at different times. Especially audio, it takes longer to produce. And hey, if you have a separat audiobook launch date, that gives you something else to talk about.
