A rule before all the tips. If you are querying a work of fiction, it should be DONE! Done! Complete. Yes, there will likely be edit rounds with your agent and then your editor. But you should be done. Expect that first query to get a full request. Which, doesn’t happen for most. But I got a full request on my manuscript three days after I started querying.

Patience

Have a plan- who are you querying first, how many passes will you see before reworking your query and pitch packet. At what point will you ask for additional help from your writers group/critique group or a query coach. I used one. She helped a lot!

Get QueryTracker Premium. I am super frugal, definitely to the detriment of my business at times, but it is $25 and you will get every penny of value out of it.

Have an amazing query. It should not be rambly. It should be not have in jokes from the book they haven’t read yet. Concise. Write it, Revise. Revise. Revise.

Follow the requested guidelines

Don’t give up after five queries

Don’t only query one agent at a time

Trust that your book has an audience
