What is Publisher’s Marketplace? https://www.publishersmarketplace.com/
It is a one-stop shop for all kinds of information on which agents are signing deals, for how much (there is an accepted terminology and amount associated with it), which editors are acquiring which books, when agents or editors are making moves to new companies. It is a lot of information.
There is a paid subscription version that authors, or agents, or editors can access to see all this information. All of it is behind a paywall. With one exception: agent profiles are visible to anyone. For example, here is my agent’s profile: https://www.publishersmarketplace.com/members/kristinaperez/
I did not use the paid Publisher’s Marketplace when I was querying. I did have Query Tracker Pro so I could sort and save which agents were open, which were open to queries in my genre, how quickly they responded, etc.
Within Query Tracker, I could see the agent profile and they would link out to the Publisher’s Marketplace profile and the Manuscript Wishlist profile as well as the agent website. That’s a lot of information and I found that the agent website was always my go-to for understanding what that agent wants right now. Did the PM or MSWishlist profile get updated right away? I don’t know.
I got full requests, and I got an offer.
So one way that I know other authors use PM when they are querying or deciding which agent offer to accept is to look at their recent sales. Are they getting a lot of sales, when was their last big sale. I didn’t do that. For one, I could see via my agent’s social media that they had been getting a lot of deals so confirmed. But, there is a delay in when a deal is made and when it is announced on PM. So if you have two agent offers and it is a toss-up, I don’t think PM is going to help you decide because all the deals you see from today could have been made a few months ago, maybe even longer.
If you have the publisher’s marketplace access (or a friend who can do a quick search for you wink) ask. But I didn’t use it, and it didn’t hurt my process.
