2024 Best Reads – My Favorite Books from 2024

So many disclaimers. So I didn’t read every book written or published in 2024. I had a specific list that I was planning to work through. I did deviate from the list. So if your favorite book was published this year, then I either didn’t read it. Or I did read it and it wasn’t for me.

Second, making a really intentional list helped me to cull my massive TBR list and say “do I really want to read this?” so I didn’t read all backlist titles, I didn’t read all front list titles. It was a mix.

Third is that I am cutting off ths list at December because in order to record it and eidt it before the year ends, I haven’t stopped reading for the year.

I had five categories: Health, Parenting, Craft/Career, Research, and Fun. These categories worked for me this year, and I think I’m going to use them again next year.

Again, these are the books that resonated to most with me. I enjoyed them. Couldn’t put them down. Genuinely enjoyed and will enthusiastically recommend.

Also, I read these books in the order of what I was the most excited for so I had a lot of wins in the beginning of the year, and then not so much.

Non-Fiction
I am starting here for reasons. I love fiction. I write fiction. But as a parent and someone with a chronic illness I realized I kept diving into fiction to escape reality and I needed some non-fiction to help me with specific pain points of wanting to be a better parent and homeschooler and to empower me as a patient.

That said. Most of the nonfiction on my list I ende dup DNFing. The thing with traditionally published Non-Fiction is it is usually sold on a concept or pitch and then written after the contract is signed. So a strong book description and title sells the book for a contract. What I experienced was the downside of this. Great title. Great description, book was blah.

So I am going to tell you about 2 fantastic non-fiction books that I could NOT shut up about this year:
Immune by Phillip Dettmer
Allergic by Theresa MacPhail

As someone with 2 autoimmune conditions, these two books were SOOO informational and empowering to just know more about hwat is going on in my body. What is working, and what isnt.

Honorable Mentions to
The Creative Way by Rick Rubin
Good Inside Dr. Becky Kennedy

Fiction
For me the gauge here was: could I put it down? Can I shut up about it? If the answer is no to both, then it is on this list.

Read lots of great works:
This is How You Lose the Time War chef’s kiss beautiful. Just the flowing prose for the sake of prose.
Plastic – Scott Guild
One of the Good Guys – Araminta Hall
The Deal – Elle Kennedy I know, im finally reading more of her
You Think It, I’ll Say It – the only two times I have laughed out loud in the middle of a silent room from reading was while reading Curtis Sittenfeld. The first was Eligible, the second was this bad boy. So good!
Troy Story – Carla Luna
Swiped -LM Chilton
The Haters – Robyn Harding

Honorable Mentions:
Written by a Woman – Andrea Andersen
The List – Yomi Adegoke
The Wall of Winnepeg and Me – Mariana Zapata
