Let’s ignore 2017 and 2018 because in 2017 I sold 2 audiobooks because it was released at the way the end of the year so my growth in 2018 was astronomical.

What I want us to focus on is that I had the dip in 2019, I put one book out in Q4 that year. So, I had a lot of new titles to add for fiction and non-fiction in 2020 and 2021. In 2022 that progress slowed because of baby and mom life. I have not been adding NEW titles since super early 2023 and that title didn’t get an audiobook.

So I was projecting to see a repeat of 2022. No growth. Sales. Audiobook sales (along with print and eBook). But nothing new. The only thing that changed in 2022 that led to this massive growth in audiobook units sold and royalties earned in 2023 and 2024 was: Spotify! In 2022 Spotify acquired Findaway Voices and we as authors got to experience the benefit – as in our audiobooks available on Spotify in 2023 and 2024. As a new platform for sales, I saw good growth in 2023. Spotify Premium members being able to listen to audiobooks as part of their membership is the reason for the surge in 2024.

So if you have the rights to self-publish your audiobook (you got a trad deal but the audio rights never sold, you have always been self-publishing), you need to be on Findaway Voices. I still get solid audiobook sales from ACX for Amazon and Audible. So I’m not saying only be with Findaway Voices (although you can get to Audible and Amazon from there and for some authors they have to use FV for that – another video here on that.) But don’t miss the forest through all the trees. Don’t get so excited by a few extra percent for Amazon and ACX exclusivity that you miss the potential for other retailers. Spotify is a HUGE platform for my audiobook sales.
