Genre Series: Climate Fiction | What is CliFi | Climate Books

So let’s break down CliFi or Climate Fiction.
According to multiple articles across the internet from trusted sources like The New York Public LIbrary, LitHub, and BookRiot, the term “climate fiction” refers to novels, short stories, and films that feature a changing climate or climate change as a major plot point or backdrop for a story.

The term was originally coined by Dan Bloom in the 2000s.

This genre is usually categorized under Science Fiction or Speculative fiction depending on how close the story is set to the present day reality. It usually has some kind of dystopia element as well.

So what are some examples of Climate Fiction?
The great transition by Nick Fuller Googins
Camp Zero by Michele Min Sterling
The Madd Addam Series by Margaret Atwood (and you could also classify The Handmaid’s Tale that way too because the root cause for the issues in that book was…. Pollution and climate chaos.)
The parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler
The Disaster Tourist by Yun Ko-Eun
Interview with a #Vanlifer by Me
Heifer or Genisse, also by Me

I love to see the variety of stories in this genre and I hope you’ll check some of them out this week for Earth Day (or really any time.)

As a reminder, the fundraiser i’m hosting for the National Park Foundation will close at the end of this month, April 2025. I may just restart it again once it closes so be sure to subscribe so you know when it is live.

What are some of your favorite CliFi books? I know I missed a bunch so leave your recommendations in the comments below.
