I hear from a lot of people wanting to know exact number of “how much can I make self-publishing?” they want to make money for their efforts, and they should. Maybe they want to add a line to their business in they already have a podcast and a blog and they want to know what roi they can expect. Maybe they lost their job and they need income now. (I just did a video on how long it will take to self publish, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.)

So there are gurus out there that will tell you “you can make $X a month self-publishing if you follow my exact plan that I’ll sell you for this month a month or a year.”

Okay the amount you can make is dependent on too many factors for any person to give you a realistic estimate. What is your genre? Some genres are more lucrative but also more crowded. What is your existing audience? If you’re starting from 0 it is going to take longer to turn a profit. And then, you have to pay a lot up front. Editing, formatting, cover design, ads maybe. There are a lot of authors out there flexing on 6-figure royalty but they spend 5 figures in ads. How does that number sit in your gut. Can you stomach that.

My caution to you, is anyone telling you with their whole chest that if you buy their program and follow their steps that you’re guaranteed a certain amount of royalties , turn around and walk away. They don’t know your book, your market, your budget.

So the range for what you can make can be hundreds of dollars in the red every month throwing good money after bad on ads (maybe you take a few months to optimize, I hope they do) or sure you could make thousands a month.
I think the best route to improving your royalties are:

• publish your next book so you can get some read through
• test and try different marketing options but pay attention so you know when to pivot.
• make friends with other authors so you can learn from people in your niche and they can recommend you to their audience
