New ways for readers to experience audiobooks | Technology tools and tricks

Two really cool things have popped up that I want you, as authors, to know about because this is an opportunity to bring this to your readers.

One is from Audible, one is from Spotify. I know, you are competitors. I know that. But I love you both equally and in direct proportion to my audiobook royalty statements each month

Audible – Meta RayBans: Somehow, some way, you have all helped me to be a known name on the audiobook self-publishing corner of YouTube. Audiophiles are appalled because I don’t have the technical know-how, and I’m just figuring it out as I go along and bringing it to you. But, because of this helper status, Audible sends me influencer gifties. Thank you, Audible. Because audiobooks are growing, they are thinking ahead on how more people can discover and listen to audiobooks who may not already be doing so. With the rise in smart gear, they saw an opportunity with Meta’s Ray-Bans, smart glasses. Like you can play music with these, and if you can play music, you can play Audiobooks. So if you want to tell any of your readers – hey, next time you’re on a stroll, put on my latest audiobook. I think it is pretty cool. Now, if I’m walking, other people around me can hear this, so I don’t love that. But let’s say someone is listening to The Infinite-Infinite and someone passes by and is intrigued by a plot point, maybe they seek it out. Who knows. Pretty cool though.

Also, I feel like an MF spy when I wear these, which is a good reminder to you to add Fake Out Make Out my sports romance/spy thriller to your Goodreads, Storygraph, and pre-order. DO IT! Or I’ll know.

Spotify – Page Match: Next is a new feature from Spotify where a reader can take a picture of the current page they are on in a book, and then the audiobook will start from that page. This literally solves my biggest problem as a multimedia reader. So if there is a book I have in print or ebook and in audio, I am stressing myself out to get to the end of a chapter and then messaging myself “chapter 10” so when I go to the audiobook, I know where to skip to. This literally solves that. And it means the author is potentially getting added revenue. If someone buys my print book or even checks it out from the library, I have made a royalty. If they then listen to a few hours on audio… I get paid by the listening hour. I am all about this. And yes, you can do this with my books that are on Spotify.

Okay, what other cool technologies or solutions have you found to grow your audiobook readership? Or if you are an audiobook reader – what is your biggest pet peeve right now that can be fixed by these tech giants? What is your fav audiobook? Please overwhelm my tbr with your recommendations!
