Heifer by Mary Kate Williams, is a chilling feminist speculative thriller between Welcome to Gattaca and The Handmaid’s Tale.
“My power is in my milk.”
Mina, 25, is single and, above all, childless. She can therefore commit herself as a “heifer” within My Lactation Membership, the company that is reinventing dairy products to feed the population in a world where climate change has had catastrophic effects on livestock farming.
Mina has big ambitions: to become the company’s top producer and earn enough money to never go hungry again. But this profitable business is not universally popular, and when a delivery of poisoned milk sparks controversy, the members of the MLM “herd” are directly threatened.
As she tries to uncover who is behind what increasingly looks like a large-scale manipulation, Mina will see the worst, and perhaps find the answer to this terrible question: Who are we willing to sacrifice so that our family is safe, fed and happy?
