Today we are going to be talking about romance. The sweet, the steamy. All the different terms and things. Because we will be talking about romance books and their distinctions, which include erotica, this video is not for viewers under the age of 18. Today we’re talking about romance. This is such a huge genre and encompasses so many types of books and subgenres I’m just going to dive right in with some data and hard-hitting facts.
As of October 2022:
Romance novels generate 1.44 Billion (with a b) in revenue each year, they are the highest-earning genre of fiction.
Many romance readers are voracious, they read an average of one novel a week. So they need 52 novels a year to keep going.
Romance books are often criticized for being formulaic. But first of all, the formula works, readers come to expect these hallmarks in the stories, and the fun is in how you play with these expected points. First, each romance needs to have these elements:
Meet cute
Building the tension
They’re in love!
Oh but something is in the way.
Happily ever after.
Types of Romance Books
Religious Romance
Sweet Romance
Romance
Spicy Romance/Steamy Romance
Erotica
Porn
So, those are your big bucket categories. As I mentioned in the trope vs subgenre video, there are a lot of both for romance. Some readers know they only want one type of romance book and they will read everything in that subgenre or trope. Some people know what they don’t want.
As self-publishing authors, romance is still a huge genre. It’s not just traditional publishing that sees success here. For people aiming to self-publish romance, this is a case where I recommend using KU/Kindle Select for the eBook for at least the first 90 days as the majority of romance readers consume these books via eReaders.
