Why does this happen?
Several Reasons:
1. Amazon sees that the book is selling well and they elect to offer a discount to incentivize more sales, this doesn’t impact your royalty
2. Great on Kindle
3. 3rd Party Resellers. These are other sellers on Amazon who are selling your book. So usually they have your book in stock or they will order a copy of your book once a customer places the order through them. If your book is doing well, these 3rd party resellers will see that they want to get in on the deal and will offer your book for sale as well. You still get your normal royalty when that reseller purchases your book. But the thing is, they are going to sell it at a higher cost so that they have some kind of profit. You’re probably thinking, okay, but why would anyone spend more? Well, if this reseller has bid up on the buy button so that their listing is primary and the Amazon listing is secondary, most customers can’t tell the difference.

How does it impact your royalties?
Most of the time this has zero impact on your royalties. But, it can still be frustrating when you are messaging a specific price and then the book is showing up as a different price. Especially when it is a higher price, that’s annoying to customers. And if it is less expensive, that’s annoying for you because you would probably be all about promoting those savings, but if you aren’t made aware of the price change you can’t do that.

What can you do about it?
In general, nothing. You can reach out to Amazon Customer Support through Author Central and ask them about the price difference, but chances are you’ll be told “sorry, can’t tell you when the price will switch back.”

If you aren’t happy with the price being shown on Amazon, direct your audience to the other channels where you are selling the book.
