Book cover research is something you can start at any time. I know some authors will start this as soon as they have an idea for their book, others wait until the manuscript is done. Really, you can start book cover research whenever. The important thing is that it doesn’t become a problem where you aren’t getting the book written. I always have time dedicated to writing my book, but if I sit down that day and the words just aren’t coming, I will do some research.
Here are the big themes around the research for your book:
You need to know what is on-trend for YOUR genre. I know a lot of your creative souls will cringe at the idea of following a trend, but this is about what your READER is looking for and knows to expect. Bodice-Ripper Romance? You gotta have that Fabio (or a lookalike) on the front. Contemporary Romance? Color-blocked illustrations. Scroll through the best sellers in your genre and just get a visual taste for what is going on. Try to spot what colors/elements/images are common
Curate your tastes with a Pinterest board. So I actually only use Pinterest for book cover research. Which is probably a good thing so I don’t go down that rabbit hole too far. I create private boards where I can save covers that I really like. Whether it is a theme or font or graphic or just all of it. It helps me to keep that all together. If you end up working with a designer a board like this will be a HUGE help for them to be able to visually see what you like and also what you don’t like.
Surprise or test. I’ve seen authors do polls of their audience to find out which book cover their readers say that they like more. Others keep it a complete surprise. I like the surprise element, personally, but to each their own. If you are going to do a poll, make sure you are polling your ideal book audience. Not just other authors who may or may not be your audience.
So those are my big tips on doing book cover research. It doesn’t have to be anything tedious or time-consuming. Chances are that as you do research for your book in terms of reading other books in the genre, you’ll get a feel for the covers that are being used as well.
