I’ve decided to self-publish wide… What do I need to do? How to publish my book outside of KU

Before you ‘go wide’ you need to look by format at what you currently have:
eBook- are you enrolled in Kindle Select (you can see on your KDP setup). This is the contract that puts your book in Kindle Unlimited or KU. Why give them different names for authors and readers? It’s a mystery of the universe we may never solve. That contract renews automatically every 90 days. If you are enrolled in Kindle Select, you need to elect to unenroll at the next renewal. AFTER that renewal expires, you can self-publish your eBook to other platforms. AFTER. Not today, the day you click the button. AFTER the contract expires. Write it down!
Print – so you paperbacks and hardcovers. There is no official exclusive program with KDP for print books. BUT if you opted your print books into the Amazon “expanded distribution” because you thought, based on the name, it would expand the distribution for your book, and then it didn’t – you have to both opt out in KDP and then, whoever you are uploading your print book with, you need to do a title transfer form so that provider can distribute your book. I had to do with IngramSpark a million years ago during the plague. If you watched this channel before you uploaded and knew to NEVER elect the Amazon Expanded Distribution, then you’re all good! Proceed
Audio – With ACX – because KDP is for self-publishing everything except Audio with Amazon and apparently those two are never getting merged – you can elect an exclusive contract or a non-exclusive contract. If you brought your own files to the platform- self-narrated or you worked with a narrator outside their system – then this is a simpel email to ask to change your exclusive/non-exclusive setting. If you did a royalty share, you need the narrator to agree to be non-exclusive. Good luck with that.

So you’ve checked on your formats. Now you need to make sure you know WHERE you want to upload and WHY. Are you looking to add just one more login and tax set up and get the ebook out as far and wide as you can? Cool, go with Draft2Digital. Do you want bookstores to be able to order copies of your books – that’s gonna have to be IngramSpark. Do you want to have an individual account with more control and sign up with B&N Press, Apple Books for Authors, Google Books for Authors, and Kobo Writing Life?

There are no wrong answers here, but you need a plan. And you have time to make that plan while you wait for your Kindle Select contract to expire.

I have SO MUCH MORE about this process, the ins and outs of the platforms, all that jazz in Going Wide. You can get it anywhere you find great books. AND I always answer questions on this channel.
