What You Can’t Control When You Self-Publish

As an author you can control so many things when you are writing. But when you are self-publishing a lot of things are out of your control. Today I’ll let you know what you have to learn to let go of:

Hi, I’m MK Williams, an author and independent publisher. I love sharing my insights about all things self-publishing with you. Before I get into the details about today’s topic, don’t forget to subscribe. You’ll be notified when I put out new videos every week about self-publishing and make a career out of being an author.

So many people who elect to self-publish are drawn by the items that they can control. Design, editorial, your publication date. So many things are within your control. But there are several things that aren’t. If you can keep these in mind, you will have a less stressful experience.

How quickly the book appears in the online retailer. They usually give you an estimated time. Even if you go with KDP the estimate is 72 hours. Most of the time it’s earlier than that, but it can take that long. When you go with an aggregator like Smashwords or IngramSpark you have to wait for their partners to show your book. This can take a few days.

How many online retailers will elect to carry your book. With IngramSpark you have access to those retailers, but listing you is still at the discretion of that retailer. Same with libraries. Just because they can add your book to the catalog, doesn’t mean they will. You need local patrons to request your book

How quickly price changes display and the retailer may decide to list your book at a lower price if they think they can move more of them. This shouldn’t cut into your royalty.

Technical glitches in the system. Did your primary listing for your book just disappear from Amazon but the 3rd party retailers are still showing? I’ve seen this quite a few times over the past few months. It seems to be a system glitch on the Amazon site. But you don’t know when the glitch will occur nor do you know when it will be fixed.

Negative reviews: They happen and some people are just grouchy and grumpy and likely they are taking out some other frustrations in their life on your book. As hard as it is, push it aside.

If you have found this information helpful please let me know if the comments and be sure to give this video a thumbs up and don’t forget to subscribe and ring the bell.
