Today we’re going to talk about the term “wide” as it applies to self-publishing. This is a term I started to hear about in 2019 and I started hearing it from multiple sources.

Wide self-publishing is defined by what it is not. It is not Amazon-only. So if you self-publish your books on any platform outside of Amazon – you’re wide. That can be you selling them on your own personal website. It can be having your book listed on every retailer in the world. And everywhere in between. There is more talk about this now for a few reasons: more platforms and growing every day, a realization that Amazon’s focus will always be the customer, not the content creator, and the reality of 2020 showing people how fragile their business income is when they only rely on one stream.

What I’ve seen a lot of in the past year in Facebook groups and forums, like the Wide For The Win group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/556186621558858) , or even with people who work with me 1 on 1 is this eagerness to go wide. This is great, I think more authors who are informed, empowered, and not dependent on Amazon is great. But I see some of that eagerness going too far, causing problems. Like people putting their book wide even when they are in an exclusive contract with Amazon and then Amazon removes their books. Or they think wide is signing up with every single platform, even all the aggregators, which causes duplicate listings on retailers and headaches.

It’s not a simple press one button and you’re wide. You need a plan that works for your book, your audience, your schedule. There are a LOT of factors to consider.

I wrote a book on how to go wide.

Every time I post a video on this channel answering niche questions related to self-publishing wide, I would get more questions. At least once a month an author reaches out to me in a panic because they rushed to go wide and didn’t have a plan and chaos ensues.
