Mompreneur Update – 1 year of juggling baby, business, & life!

For starters – I would have had to shut down my business completely if not for the amazing support of my husband. He is there for his daughter, he is there for me. He has been working from home still and only just went back into the office and that has been a huge help. He saved at least an hour a day not commuting to and from work and getting ready. He was here every single day for lunch (and breaks). When I needed to have a call during a time my daughter was awake, he could adjust his lunch break to watch her. When I was working during her naps he would remind me to eat and take care of myself. He was infinitely patient in my requests to get a little work in on the weekends and that is why I can still do all of this. So, super dad gets a big shout out here!

Second, my business has been evolving because of this big life change. And with most evolution, it is slow but steady. I’ve committed to not taking on any more clients for my packages that I used to offer. These always took longer, ended up having a lot of scope creep and a lot of ad hoc “can we hop on a call” requests. No, I can’t just “hop” on a call. My daughter dictates my schedule and I’m not about to take a call if she is crying in the background. – no more friend projects. Always extra scope creep. I want to help them but I always over extend which isn’t fair to other clients and then our friendship becomes all about the book for a while. But I also don’t like having to say no to clients who need my help. So I’m leaning into offering my 1 on 1 consults which still allow me to help people. I know the exact date and time and can plan ahead to have someone watch my daughter or I can block off a whole week if I need to. (I also think the authors get more from this because they come better prepared and get their homework done between calls when there is a hard cost associated with it.)

And in general I was so nervous this time last year. Not only for being a mom but that I might have to shut everything down. I’ve said this multiple times this past year and I mean it, I’ve built this once, I could do it again. But I’m glad I haven’t had to do that yet. As my daughter gets bigger and more active I’ll have less and less time during the day to dedicate to my business but she’ll only be this little once so it’s worth it to me. (Hence I’m doing a mega recording day today with lots of videos!)

I’m getting better at setting boundaries around work but I’m loving this very adaptive job I’ve made for myself. My career as an author can adapt to what my life needs and not the other way around and it’s really refreshing.
