Can I still upload my book to Smashwords? | Draft2Digital (D2D) Smashwords Acquisition Update Mar22

Draft2Digital Acquiring Smashwords: Updates for Smashwords Authors

Hello, I am dropping in quickly to give you all some updates from a conversation I had with Kevin Tumlinson at Draft2Digital last week. I was planning to record our convo and edit it as a video but I was in the middle of a major allergy attack so… it was not a pretty scene. So a big thank you to Kevin for his time and for pretending that all my sniffling and sneezing on our call wasn’t super annoying.
But in case you missed it, several weeks ago Draft2Digital announced that it would be acquiring Smashwords. Which is BIG news for us self-publishing authors, especially those of us who are publishing wide or plan to. The dust has settled on the announcement and now we are all left thinking… so when are all the changes that impact us authors going to go down?

If you are a D2D author already, there’s no changes for you except for added distribution options, yay!

But if you are a Smashwords author like me you may be thinking… “well, what now? Can I still upload the book I was planning to release next month? Will this put my plans on hold?” I know, because I had those same questions.

So after chatting with Kevin, here is where things stand as of 3/23/22 at 11:10 am:
For Smashwords authors, keep doing what you are comfortable with. If you have a book to release and planned to upload to Smashwords, upload away. If you want to start getting familiar with the D2D interface, then upload there.
Set up a D2D account. Even if you have no plans to publish anything for a while, get the account set up so you can get used to the interface. Just make sure you use the same information to create the account (name, Tax ID number, email address, etc.) so that the two companies can link and migrate them correctly.
If you are a first-time author with no books on either system yet, but you had done your research and planned to go with Smashwords over D2D, then upload to Smashwords. I know this is particularly important to writers of Erotica and the verification system Smashwords has is not going away.

Okay, I think that should cover your bases for now. I’m going to stay in touch with the teams at Smashwords and D2D so that as updates/announcements come along I can bring you more info.
