What are book plates? How to set up book plates? How to offer autographed copies of books to readers

Today I am going to go over bookplates and how this can be an option to get autographed copies of your book to readers. So for a while, I have maintained an inventory of my own books and sold them on my PayHip storefront to readers. This has been the only way people have been able to get autographed copies of my books for the past two and a half years. Prior to that, I did a few in-person events as well where people could purchase an autographed book or bring a book for me a sign.

But here is the thing about the process: it is lumpy. Some of my books keep selling out whereas others just sell a bit slower. Then I have to maintain not only this inventory but my shipping supplies and then go to the post office to do my media mail orders. I’m not complaining, I love to be able to offer this to my readers and connect with them this way, but it’s been a lot. And to be honest, I move more books on the main retailers than I do this way and those people can’t get my autograph anymore since I’m not doing in-person events again for a while.

So in my research and connecting with other authors, I discovered bookplates. Bookplates, for lack of a better word, are stickers or labels that a reader can add to their book that has the author’s signature and perhaps a message.

After months and months of dragging my feet and overthinking this, I finally bought some labels. I got 3 ⅓” x 4” labels so six to a sheet. And designed my publisher logo on labels in MS Word. Definitely make sure you use their templates because otherwise, it’s super frustrating. Then I just had to print them out.

As of right now, my plan is to offer these for $1 on my PayHip site. So if you bought one of my books online via Amazon, B&N, etc. and you want a bookplate you can get one. That dollar covers the cost of the labels, envelopes, and stamps. So I make nothing but I lose nothing.

My go-forward strategy is to offer these as a preorder incentive. So for those who preorder my books and send me proof of purchase they would get the bookplate at no cost. But I don’t have any books on preorder… yet.
