You wrote a book! Yay! And Now you need a website. So many authors groan at the thought of having to build and maintain a website, but it’s 2020. There are 0 excuses for you at this point. Before you dig in, here are the things that you need and maybe should have on your author website.
Ability to subscribe to learn more about you and your books. And with that you’ll need a privacy policy.
Links to purchase your books from retailers and from you directly. If you have one book it is super easy to make sure this book is front and center. As you start to add more books, you’ll need to be more intentional about how you organize the website. Are these books in one series or in one genre? Are they different genres or formats? It’s up to you how it is organized, but it should be easy for any user to find out what books you have written. Some authors do a separate website for each book. I do a page for each book because having all those URLs would start to get really expensive for me.
Resources for readers. I have links to book club reader guides. I want more book clubs to select to read my books, so I want to make it that much easier for them. If you have non-fiction books you might have worksheets or infographics to accompany that content.
Things you should have but aren’t necessarily a must-have if you are just getting your first book out: a press kit and links to any press that you have had related to your books. This will make it easier for you to pitch going on other podcasts if you can show that you have experience with interviews.
I do weekly posts of these videos and the notes. This isn’t required, but many people with websites leverage the blogging function to improve their SEO rankings and discoverability. Not a requirement for you to do, but something to consider.
I go into your author website in Book Marketing for the First-Time Author so you can read more about that. But one of the best ways to research what can go on your website is to look at other Authors’ websites.
