In today’s video I am going to start with a WHOLE bunch of disclaimers

If you are not a US citizen or US resident, this tutorial is not for you. This will show you how to register your book with the US Copyright Office. Most countries have their own copyright laws and registration systems. I suggest you find the correct tutorial for your country.

If you have a potential issue with your copyright, such as someone pirating it or trying to infringe only our copyright or someone saying that you are infringing on theirs TALK TO A LAWYER. I’m not your lawyer. I don’t even play one on TV.

If someone is pirating your work, you should do a DCMA takedown request now. It is much faster to do and then you can come back to this video to register your copyright.

As a US citizen or resident any creative work you make is already protected under copyright law the second you make it. You type the words into the microsoft document – bam, copyright protected. But you need to put that little © to make sure you are showing that. The copyright registration is an added layer of protection.

The website I am going to show you, the US Copyright Office is THE ONLY body that can issue this registration. Beware of scammers.

This costs $65. Some authors may think “uh that’s small change” some of you might think “I have to sell a hundred copies of my eBook at 99 cents a pop to be able to afford that.” Both are correct.

Registering for copyright and having a copyright page in your book are two totally different things. ALL BOOKs should have a copyright page immediately following the title page where you are asserting your rights. I have a video on that here and here. Registering for copyright can take place after you have formatted the book for publication and you likely won’t have the copyright registration number on the copyright page. That’s okay. It takes like 6 months to get these things back.
